The art starts with Nature
Hi, I'm Freyja C.G. Kohler — I’m a mixed-media fiber artist, printmaker, and storyteller based in the Pacific Northwest. My work stitches together memory, nature, and emotion—using thread, ink, and found textures to explore the quiet complexity of the world around us and the stories we carry within.
Raised among the evergreens and misty shores of this region, I’ve always been drawn to texture: the weave of fabric, the grain of carved wood, the layered surface of a well-worn print. These tactile experiences shape my art, blending traditional printmaking with textiles, digital illustration, and soft sculpture.
Inspired by the intimacy of close relationships and the ever-changing beauty of nature, I use thread and ink to weave past and present into something tangible. More than anything, I hope my art offers a sense of connection—a reminder that we are all bound together by the stories we carry.
My Approach
The process of the Harbor Seal, inspired by the local seals in the Pudget Sound. I was able to get close at the Seattle Aquarium to see their beautiful spotted coats.
My illustrations are rooted in traditional art mediums, I work in watercolor for commissions and original pieces, but my design work lives in a space between painting and graphic art. The colors are deliberate and vivid, the lines are clean, and the subjects are always drawn from the real landscapes I walk through: the chanterelle mushroom tucked under a cedar, the tide pool anemone at low tide in November.
I'm drawn to the idea that nature doesn't have to be muted or reverent to be beautiful. It can be bold. It can be joyful. It can live on your phone case or the wall above your desk and make you smile on an ordinary Wednesday.
